RESUMO

AIM: Radiation therapy is a cornerstone of oncological treatment and oncological patients show greater risk of developing complications related to COVID-19 infection. Stringent social restrictions have ensured a significant reduction in the spread of the virus, but also gave rise to a number of critical issues for radiation oncology wards. For this reason, the Directors of the Radiation Oncology Departments (RODs) of Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise regions shared their experience and ideas in order to create a common document that may assist in facing the negative impacts of the pandemic on radiation oncology wards and patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted according to the Estimate-Talk-Estimate method. Five issues were proposed and rated. Among approved issues, statements were proposed anonymously, then harmonized and finally voted on according to a Likert scale from 1 to 9. Those for which an agreement of 7-9 was observed were finally approved. RESULTS: The document was developed with 42 statements dealing about safety measures for patients and staff, organization of clinical and work activities, usage of Information Technology systems for meetings/smart working. An agreement was recorded for 34 statements. CONCLUSION: This document sets out some recommendations for RODs and can provide valuable management information for Oncological Radiotherapy wards.

RESUMO

Lanthanide-doped fluoride up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) represent the new class of imaging contrast agents which hold great potential for overcoming existing problems associated with traditionally used dyes, proteins and quantum dots. In this study, a new kind of hybrid NaYF4:Yb,Er/PLGA nanoparticles for efficient biolabeling were prepared through one-pot solvothermal synthesis route. Morphological and structural characteristics of the as-designed particles were obtained using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, while their cytotoxicity as well as up-conversion (UC) labeling capability were tested in vitro toward human gingival cells (HGC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The results revealed coexistence of the cubic (Fm-3m) and hexagonal (P63/m) phase in spherical and irregularly shaped nanoparticles, respectively. PLGA [Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)] ligands attached at the surface of UCNPs particles provide their enhanced cellular uptake and enable high-quality cells imaging through a near-infrared (NIR) laser scanning microscopy (λex = 980 nm). Moreover, the fact that NaYF4:Yb,Er/PLGA UCNPs show low cytotoxicity against HGC over the whole concentration range (10-50 µg/mL) while a dose dependent viability of OSCC is obtained indicates that these might be a promising candidates for targeted cancer cell therapy.

RESUMO

The emerging up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) offer a wide range of biotechnology applications, from biomarkers and deep tissue imaging, to single molecule tracking and drug delivery. Their successful conjugation to biocompatible agents is crucial for specific molecules recognition and usually requires multiple steps which may lead to low reproducibility. Here, we report a simple and rapid one-step procedure for in situ synthesis of biocompatible amino-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs that could be used for NIR-driven fluorescence cell labeling. X-ray diffraction showed that UCNPs synthesized through chitosan-assisted solvothermal processing are monophasic and crystallize in a cubic α phase. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the obtained crystals are spherical in shape with a mean diameter of 120 nm. Photoluminescence spectra indicated weaker green (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and stronger red emission (4F9/2 → 4I15/2), as a result of enhanced non-radiative 4I11/2 → 4I13/2 Er3+ relaxation. The presence of chitosan groups at the surface of UCNPs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This provides their enhanced internalization in cells, at low concentration of 10 µg ml-1, without suppression of cell viability after 24 h of exposure. Furthermore, upon 980 nm laser irradiation, the amino-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs were successfully used in vitro for labeling of two human cell types, normal gingival and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

We aimed to determine hemogregarines presence in snakes of the Boidae family kept in captivity in Pará (PA), Brazil, and to relate it with sex, clinical and hematological and ectoparasitism. This study had authorization from Sisbio/IBAMA to be done. Nineteen Boa constrictor snakes were used, belonging to the "Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi" (Belém/ PA) and "Xerimbabo Farm" (Santo Antônio do Tauá/PA). Blood smears were examined with 400x magnification, while the parasitemia percentage was determined by counting 550 red blood cells with 1000x magnification. From the snakes studied (n=19), nine were parasitized (47.36%) and there was no correlation between hemogregarines presence, sex, clinical and hematological changes. Hemoparasitosis correlation was detected only with the ectoparasites presence; however further studies are needed to determine the real hemogregarines prevalence in snakes kept in captivity in Pará, since there is a huge gap of data in the veterinary specialized literature about the fauna of the Amazon region.

Caudal anaesthesia was initially proposed in 1926, since when techniques have been evolved for lumbar and sacral anaesthesia. Essentially, epidural anaesthesia demands regional anatomy knowledge. We aimed to determine medullar conus topography in sloth (Bradipus variegatus), in order to supply information for epidural anaesthesia in this species. Four adult sloths were investigated, two males and two females, that died from natural causes and were donated by the Zoobotanic Park of Emilio Goeldi Museum, Belém/Pará. It was observed that the medullar conus lies between L3 and S1vertebrae, average length measuring 2.7cm, and that the lumbar swelling is located between L1 and L3 with an average length of 1.0cm. We concluded that the most appropriate site to perform epidural anesthesia in sloths is from L1 to L3 vertebral spaces.

RESUMO

MOTIVATION: We describe a novel approach to explore DNA nucleotide sequence data, aiming to produce high-level categorical and structural information about the underlying chromosomes, genomes and species. RESULTS: The article starts by analyzing chromosomal data through histograms using fixed length DNA sequences. After creating the DNA-related histograms, a correlation between pairs of histograms is computed, producing a global correlation matrix. These data are then used as input to several data processing methods for information extraction and tabular/graphical output generation. A set of 18 species is processed and the extensive results reveal that the proposed method is able to generate significant and diversified outputs, in good accordance with current scientific knowledge in domains such as genomics and phylogenetics. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Source code freely available for download at http://www4.dei.isep.ipp.pt/etc/dnapaper2010, implemented in Free Pascal and UNIX scripting tools. Study input data available online for download at University of California at Santa Cruz Genome Bioinformatics, http://hgdownload.cse.ucsc.edu/downloads.html.

RESUMO

The crystal structure of 4-phenyl-benzaldehyde reveals the presence of a dimer linked by the C=O and C9-H groups of adjacent molecules. In the liquid phase, the presence of C-H...O bonded forms is revealed by both vibrational and NMR spectroscopy. A DeltaH value of -8.2 +/- 0.5 kJ mol(-1) for the dimerisation equilibrium is established from the temperature-dependent intensities of the bands assigned to the carbonyl-stretching modes. The NMR data suggest the preferential engagement of the C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-H groups as hydrogen bond donors, instead of the C(9)-H group. While ab initio calculations for the isolated dimers are unable to corroborate these NMR results, the radial distribution functions obtained from molecular dynamics simulations show a preference for C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-H...O contacts relative to the C(9)-H...O ones.
